Gujarat Earthquake

2001

A school door left standing in the middle of ruins of Gujarat earthquake 2001.

The earthquake destroyed over 40 percent of homes, several schools and hospitals of the affected region. Almost all buildings in Bhuj were destroyed. A major after effect of the earthquake was that around 2 million people were rendered homeless as 400,000 houses were destroyed*.

Doors mark the difference between the inside and outside of our homes. We place them with the hope to ensure safety and privacy but disasters takes away everything. Nothing except from concrete is left in the place which was once a school for children, where they felt safe and comfortable, where their parents left them everyday knowing well that their kids will be secure, where probably each one of us have gone sometime in our lives and have learnt major life lessons.
